The Last Post

The Last Post (trumpet, live electronics and text, 2016)

During the later phases of the second world war Dennis Marshall wrote a series of letters to his fiancée, tracing his journey as a Signaller in the 30 Corps of the British Army. These letters describe his experiences and offer a very personal insight into his thoughts and feelings, and a human connection to the events of the time. Dennis' grandson, musician Tom Poulson along with Alistair MacDonald and Susan Worsfold, explore these letters in an extraordinary new work that brings together the words from these letters with new music for trumpet and live electronics, reflecting on the times, technology and sounds of the era in an immersive performance.

Commissioned by St Magnus International Festival for the remarkable Mess Hall at Ness Battery, Stromness.

"...one of the festival's most adventurous new works..." Tom Service, Music Matters Radio 3 (25.06.16)

Tom Poulson: trumpet ... Alistair MacDonald: composer/live electronics ... Susan Worsfold: director
