Gun ghrian

Gun ghrian (for voice and electronics, 2022)

Gun ghrian sets words in Scottish Gaelic from Angus Peter Campbell’s work Anail  (Breathing mist into the morning air). The poet describes this as a sequence of small ‘moments’. I made a selection from this sequence and use one such moment as a recurring chorus.

Gun ghrian
cha bhiodh sìon
beò riamh.

Without the sun
nothing
would ever live.

The piece was written for Taylor Wilson and first performed at The Scottish Art Club, Edinburgh, 9 April 2022 as part of Ùrachadh (New Growth).
